Chapter Twenty

It was starting to get dark when Flynn and Fahy arrived at Mervue to intercept Sandra Ward. They parked at the side of Gregory Millican Interiors’ premises, so that they would not be conspicuous, but still had a good view of any approaching vehicles.

A few minutes after they were settled, a two-year-old beige Skoda Octavia pulled in and parked facing the building. A dark-haired woman, probably in her late thirties, and smartly dressed in a green business suit got out. She had a leather document folder in her left hand, and as she walked away from the car towards the entrance to the building she pressed the key fob, and the doors of the Skoda clunked shut. The detectives were pleased to note that they hadn’t been observed, at least not obviously so.

It was a few minutes after five when a black Renault Megane drove in and parked beside the Skoda.

“Check the number plate, Sally. I think this is our target,” Flynn said.

“Yup, that’s our mark. Let’s go,” Fahy said, opening the door of their car and getting her warrant card out of her pocket. They approached Sandra Ward who had the back passenger door of her car open and was collecting some carpet and wallpaper samples to take inside.

“Ms Ward,” Flynn said. “My name is Detective Inspector Flynn, and this is my colleague Detective Sergeant Fahy. We’d like a word please.”

Ward stood up, her arms full of the chattels of her trade, and looked around furtively as if to establish if there was any easy escape route, but finding none, refocused back on the Gardaí.

“Yes, but it’s not very convenient right now. I have to get these inside and write up my orders. Could you come back tomorrow?” she said, rather hopefully.

Fahy had moved around behind the woman, in case she decided to make a run for it.

“I’m afraid that won’t be possible, Ms Ward. We need you to come into Mill Street with us. We have some questions for you.”

Ward hadn’t given up yet.

“OK. Well, I just need to leave this stuff inside. I’ll be back in a minute.”

“Put those things back in your car, please, Ms Ward. I’d prefer not to have to arrest you,” Flynn said.

Fahy had moved in quite close behind Sandra Ward to occupy the woman’s space, and make it clear to her that she had no choice but to comply with Flynn’s request. It didn’t take Ward long to process the situation.

“All, right. I’ll come, but I’m not happy. What’s this all about, anyway?”

“We’ll discuss it at the station, Ms Ward. Now, please sit into the back of our car with Sergeant Fahy.”

When Flynn and Fahy arrived back in Mill Street with Sandra Ward, Lyons was back as well after her meeting with the superintendent.

Flynn took Ward to introduce her to the desk sergeant, and escort her to an interview room, while Sally Fahy went to find Lyons to bring her up to date.

Lyons was pleased with the news.

“Give me a few minutes, Sally.
